In Romans 6:1-7 Paul encourages believers that they can and should choose not to sin because they have died to sin in Christ when they were united to Christ by faith.

Summary:

“To sin, or not to sin?” that is the question.

This is the privilege of the believer.

By the grace of God...

Paul’s point here is that the believer no longer has to sin (Ephesians 2:1–10).

Something has happened to the believer.

Problem of sin in Adam (5:12)…

Proof of sin in Moses/Law (5:13-14)...

Solution to sin in Christ (5:15-19).

Purpose/benefit of the law - proof of grace (verses works) (5:20-21)

“Increase” - not more or greater sin, but awareness or acknowledgment (v. 20; Romans 3:20)

“Reign” - rule over - The reign of death is overcome by the reign of grace (v. 21).

Grace (5:15) is exalted (vv. 20-21). Which brings up the question in 6:1 and Paul’s next point...

Which is … (Though we were DEAD in sin in Adam, 5:12-14)

We are DEAD to sin in Christ (6:1-7).

We are ALIVE to God in Christ (6:8-14).

There are overlaps here (6:1-14), but still theses emphases.

What has happened? (vv. 1-2)

Question about sinning - does it really matter?

YES! We’ve died to sin - radical change - opposite of dead in sin.

Dead in sin/dead to sin - living in sin/living free from sin

Death - release - from the power/control of sin (Colossians 3:3; 1 Peter 2:24).

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

1 Peter 2:24 ESV

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Not - why can’t we? But - why would we?

How did it happen? (vv. 3-5)

In Christ - we died to sin in Christ. We died when He died.

Did you understand the meaning of your baptism? Remember, this is what it symbolized.

If you are in Christ by faith, then...

As Christ literally died, was buried, and was resurrected...

So you spiritually died, was buried, and was resurrected.

We are “united with” (identified with) Christ by faith in Christ.

Baptism symbolizes this identification - a physical symbol for a spiritual reality (Ephesians 2:5–6).

even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

We memorialize this, we can remember this, we should live this (2 Corinthians 5:14–15; 2 Timothy 2:11).

For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him;

Notice the life change in this (v. 4). A real spiritual change for a real living change.

Why did it happen? (vv. 6-7)

“In order that” - this is a reason/purpose

“Body...” - living body - so that sin won’t live

“Enslaved”/ “slaves” - serve - we don’t have to obey sin

“Set free”/ “freed” - justified - this means something for living (Galatians 2:20)

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Acknowledgment

(see “know” in vv. 3, 6)

You should know that you can choose not to sin.

And this choice is a part of your new identity in Christ.
